DIBELS 2025

For Parents and Caregivers of Students in Grades 1-5

The Malden Public Schools is committed to providing high quality instruction to all students. We are excited to share that this year, our daily schedule includes a dedicated Literacy Intervention Block for all students. This block is an important part of our commitment to meeting the individual literacy needs of every learner.

As part of this work, we administer assessments to help assign the most appropriate literacy supports for individual learners. In the first three weeks of school, your student participated in the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) 8th Edition literacy assessment. Based on the results, we have assigned students to intervention groups most appropriate to their current literacy skill levels.

To ensure each student receives the most appropriate support, we monitor student progress and adjust grouping and instructional supports accordingly. This means that as students develop skills, they will be reassigned to groups to continue receiving instruction aligned with their current needs.

On Thursday, October 2, Parents and Caregivers received DIBELS results for their student(s) via ParentSquare.

DIBELS assessments are given three times per year, with the next assessment planned for mid-year. We will update you with your student’s mid-year results in January.

For more information on how to interpret your student’s DIBELS results, we ask that you attend our school’s informational session:

For our students who are multilingual learners, we understand that English is not their first language, which can impact their performance on this assessment. Therefore, the screener assessment results will be interpreted with your child’s English proficiency levels in mind in order to provide appropriate literacy instruction for your child. If your child has an IEP (Individualized Education Plan), the results of this screener have been shared with your child’s school based team and will be used to help tailor instruction. Supplemental classroom-based assessments with observation-based protocols can also provide a wider view of students’ skills in various contexts.

If you have any questions about your child’s assessment results, please attend our DIBELS event or contact your child’s teacher.
